Filtration and Circulation

A canonical guide to sand, cartridge, and DE filters; clean baseline pressure; backwashing; and cloudy-water filtration fixes.

Filtration and Circulation

Cloudy water often starts with flow, filter condition, or dirty media long before it becomes a chemistry emergency.

Baseline first

Clean filter pressure is a local measurement for your system. Use changes from your clean baseline instead of generic PSI folklore whenever possible.

1

Document your clean baseline

A filter only becomes diagnosable once you know what normal looks like.

Clean or backwash the filter completely.
Record the clean pressure and pump speed/RPM used for the reading.
Note valve positions and whether water features were on.
2

Match maintenance to filter type

Sand, cartridge, and DE filters behave differently and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Map the family before you open it: Pentair Clean & Clear or Quad DE, Hayward SwimClear, ProGrid, or ProSeries, Jandy CL, CV, or DEV, or another exact family.
Backwash sand and DE filters only when the pressure rise or manual indicates it is time.
Clean cartridges when pressure rise, flow drop, or visible loading indicates it is time.
Follow the manual for full teardown, hose cleaning, or media replacement intervals.
3

When cloudy water is mechanical

The filter can only catch what the circulation system presents to it.

Empty baskets and inspect the pump lid and o-ring for suction leaks.
Check return strength and compare it to normal.
Brush surfaces so suspended debris actually reaches the filter.
Vacuum to waste when there is a heavy settled load that would overwhelm the filter.
4

Using DE carefully

DE can sharpen filtration performance, but it is not a casual powder to throw around.

Wear appropriate respiratory and eye protection when handling DE.
Add only small amounts in systems and situations that support it.
Stop if pressure rises too quickly or the filter manual does not support the method.
Stop conditions / cautions
  • • Do not treat DE-to-sand as universal manufacturer guidance.
5

Circulation tuning

The goal is even circulation and enough filtration time for the conditions, not a fixed daily runtime myth.

Adjust runtime for debris load, heat, bather load, and water clarity.
Aim returns to reduce dead spots rather than blasting one wall.
Use higher flow strategically for skimming or cleanup, then back down for efficiency if the system supports it.

Checklist

  1. 1Establish clean filter pressure and use changes from that baseline rather than generic PSI folklore.
  2. 2Understand when cloudy water is chemistry-driven versus filtration-driven.
  3. 3Handle DE carefully and avoid unnecessary dust exposure.
  4. 4Choose maintenance steps that match your filter type and manufacturer manual.
