Cleaner Systems and Debris Removal

Choose suction-side, pressure-side, robotic, or in-floor cleaning systems by debris load, pad plumbing, and service burden.

Use this when
  • Choose suction-side, pressure-side, robotic, or in-floor cleaning systems by debris load, pad plumbing, and service burden.
You'll need
  • Cleaner type
  • Filter pressure
  • Pump model
Stop and escalate if
  • Do not keep running a cleaner that is twisting cords, dragging air, or forcing the pad outside its normal operating range.
FAÇA ISTO PRIMEIRO

Pick the cleaner family that matches your debris load and pad plumbing before changing parts.

Choose by the dominant debris

Start with what the pool collects most days, not the worst day you can imagine.

  • Leaf-heavy or seed-heavy pools usually favor pressure-side or robotic cleaning because they handle larger debris without making the filter do all the work.
  • Fine dust or routine grit usually favors robotic cleaning first; suction is acceptable only when the pad has spare flow to give.
  • Mixed debris should follow the dominant load, not the rare worst-case storm.
  • If the model does not land in the supported manual families, treat it as unknown and pull the exact manual before ordering parts. Supported manual families include Paramount: Caretaker 99 in-floor cleaner; Polaris: P38 pressure cleaner, Vac-Sweep classic pressure cleaners, 3900 / P39 pressure cleaners, and TR36P pressure cleaner, and 16 more; Maytronics: Dolphin Nautilus corded family, Dolphin Nautilus EON family, Dolphin E line, and Dolphin Liberty family, and 5 more; Pentair: Prowler robotic cleaners, Rebel suction-side cleaners, Warrior suction-side cleaners, and Kreepy Krauly Kruiser family; Hayward: TigerShark family and AquaNaut family.

Check what the pad can support

The cleaner choice changes the hydraulic cost, the service burden, or both.

  • Choose suction-side only when skimming still works and the circulation system can spare the flow.
  • Choose pressure-side only when the booster path, return pressure, and bag maintenance are already part of the pad plan.
  • Choose robotic when you want to keep hydraulic load off the pad and can manage its cord, power supply, filters, and storage.
  • Choose in-floor only when the pool already has the valve and head system and you are willing to maintain it as an integrated system.
3

Know the service points before buying parts

Cleaner problems are often wear parts or plumbing context, not a reason to replace the whole unit.

  • Suction-side: check diaphragm/flapper/turbine wear, hose swivels, hose leaks, throat obstructions, and skimmer or vac-port suction before blaming the head.
  • Pressure-side: check bag load, tail sweep, backup valve, wall fitting, feed hose floats, booster pump, and pressure restrictor before replacing the cleaner.
  • Robotic: check filters, tracks, brushes, impeller debris, cord swivel, power supply, and storage routine before blaming pool chemistry or circulation.
  • In-floor: check valve module sequencing, stuck heads, debris in the canister, zone pressure, and winterization damage before assuming the floor system is useless.
4

Stop when the cleaner is causing the next problem

A cleaner should remove debris, not create the repair you did not have yesterday.

  • Stop if a cleaner tangles, stalls, climbs badly, or starts damaging the surface.
  • Stop if a suction unit starves skimming or a pressure unit loses its feed pressure.
  • Stop if an in-floor system has stuck valves, missing heads, or unknown sequencing.
Warnings
  • Do not keep running a cleaner that is twisting cords, dragging air, or forcing the pad outside its normal operating range.
5

Keep the decision narrow

Do not turn a cleaner choice into a circulation redesign.

  • Use the family manual for parts, hose length, tracks, bags, and storage steps.
  • Treat a broken cleaner as a service item, not as a reason to overwork the pump.
  • If the pool needs circulation help and cleaning help at the same time, address both problems separately.

Suction-side

Best when the pool has spare circulation flow and you want a simple cleaner that shares the pad load.

Ferramenta certa

Use suction-side when skimming stays acceptable, the pump can spare the flow, and you want a straightforward hose-and-head setup.

Ferramenta errada

Do not choose suction-side when the pad is already flow-starved or when you need the cleaner to work independently of filtration.

Shares circulation flow with the filter.

Pressure-side

Best when a booster path or dedicated pressure line already exists and the debris is heavy enough to justify bag service.

Ferramenta certa

Use pressure-side when the booster plumbing is real, the return pressure is available, and debris bags are easy to service.

Ferramenta errada

Do not choose pressure-side when there is no pressure source or when extra plumbing and bag upkeep would become the bigger problem.

Needs an actual pressure source.

Robotic

Best when you want the least hydraulic load on the pad and can handle the cleaner's own power and storage care.

Ferramenta certa

Use robotic when you want independent cleaning, separate filtration, and minimal impact on the pool's circulation system.

Ferramenta errada

Do not use robotic as a substitute for bad circulation or if the cord, power supply, or storage routine is going to be ignored.

Own power, own maintenance.

In-floor

Best when the pool was designed for it and the owner is willing to maintain valves, heads, and sequencing as a system.

Ferramenta certa

Use in-floor when the valve system, head layout, and service plan already belong to the pool.

Ferramenta errada

Do not treat in-floor as a retrofit generic cleaner or choose it if you are trying to avoid integrated service work.

Treat it as an integrated system.

Dúvidas? (3)

Which cleaner is simplest to live with?

Robotic is usually the simplest on the hydraulics, but it still needs cord, filter, and storage care.

When is suction-side a good fit?

When the pad has spare flow, the pool is not debris-heavy, and you want a cleaner that stays close to the circulation system.

Can in-floor be added later?

Usually not in a clean way. Treat it as a pool-specific system that only makes sense when the valve and head package already exists.

Cleaner Boundary

Treat cleaner systems as mechanical equipment with moving parts, pressure, and electrical paths. Owner checks are fine until the service path opens.

OWNER-SAFE
  • Clean baskets, inspect hoses or cords, and confirm the cleaner's path is unobstructed before you assume the unit failed.
  • Check filter pressure, suction, and cleaner-specific debris traps only when the manual allows owner service.
  • Document the cleaner family and the exact symptom before you order parts.
PRO-ONLY
  • Open the motor, booster pump, gearbox, or pressure plumbing that powers the cleaner.
  • Repair internal electrical, hydraulic, or valve components that the manual reserves for service.
  • Change in-floor plumbing or cleaner automation settings that affect circulation logic.
STOP NOW
  • A damaged power cord, exposed wiring, or shock concern around the cleaner or booster system.
  • Suction entrapment, a jammed hose that will not clear safely, or a pressure fault that keeps returning.
  • Any cleaner fault that points back to pad plumbing instead of the removable cleaner head.

Educational guidance only. Verify labels, manuals, local code, and site conditions before acting. Stop for electrical, gas, structural, drain, drowning, injury, emergency, or chemical-mixing risk.
